HAPPENINGS AT HEADQUARTERS

Shelby’s Memorable Moment:

She has many…. Let’s start with this one….

I will never forget Andy!

When I first went to pick him up he was hiding in a kind stranger’s dog house. The man knew the dog although it was not his dog. He was a stray that would come by to play with the man’s dog, eat sometimes and then wander off.

Andy was not coming to play. So when the man searched for him, he found him in the dog house. As dark settled in, he stayed with Andy, reassuring him until I got there.

At first, Andy did not want to be my friend. He didn’t want to hurt me but he was in pain and I was someone he had never seen or smelt before.

The kind gentleman took the top off the dog house, picked Andy up, and carried him to the car. They said their goodbyes and I got Andy back to the rescue to go to work.

He came in with what was assumed to be a mountain lion attack. A deep gash opening up his back, right between his shoulder blades. I could have probably fit my whole hand in there

I did bandage changes every 12 hours for a week. The wound would not stop leaking. When it did finally stop leaking we moved to once a day changes. Then we started lazer therapy and saw significant improvement

Of all the improvements, the one that filled my soul was watching him form bonds and trust with people….

Allowing us to help him — I mean “really” allow us to help him.

Because after every bandage change he gots lots and lots of love!

Andy was with us for three months and he stole everyone’s hearts in that time.

We had a school field trip come to the rescue for a tour. It was a group of special needs kids. We brought out Andy to talk about him and show them how to change a bandage.

As usual after every bandage change Andy was ready for love. Many of the kids did just that. Hugged him… Petted him… Kissed him… Andy was calm and thought he had hit the jackpot.

He started showing interest in one of the kids. Just paying attention to the boy and wanting attention, but not in a pushy way. The boy wanted Andy’s attention too but he was really scared.

With the help of his teacher, the boy pet Andy with the back of his hand, smiled, and squealed. Andy did the same. It was awesome to see Andy being so patient and kind.

Andy was a special boy.

Dawn and Heather were present to accept the award for TMAR.

We are all deeply honored that we have had the privilege of partnering with NDSU. Through this collaboration, our rescue animals receive  top-notch veterinary attention, while helping students gain hands-on experience that shape their lives.

A FURRY FAMILY REUNION ROAD TRIP had been underway. Keith and Wanda had been visiting some old friends along the way.

Why? You may ask?

When Trooper (TMAR rescue) first came to us, he was sick, weak, and covered in ticks. The rescue was in the middle of a distemper outbreak. Keith had to make a difficult decision:

risk bringing him inside for care

or

leave him outside where he wouldn’t get the help he needed

It was a risky decision because without a proper ventilation system, things could have gone horribly wrong.

Right now, our “system’ is made up of windows, doors, and fans. While we do everything we can to make it work, it’s really not enough for the number of animals we save.

A professional ventilation system will:

  • greatly reduce the spread of airborne illnesses like distemper and kennel cough

  • improve air quality and help animals recover faster

  • keep both animals and staff healthier and more comfortable year-round

  • help control temperature and humidity which is crucial during harsh North Dakota seasons

This road trip has been about celebrating lives like Trooper’s and raising the funds needed to keep our rescue safe for all animals including those still waiting for their second chance.

A big Thank You to all the forever homes that let us visit!

You make it all possible to rescue even more!
