Keith’s Korner:
How’s The Property Purchase Going:
Getting closer
Let’s Talk Spay and Neuter Clinics
Numbers from our first clinic in 2025 the end of March:
🐾 137 animals spayed/neutered
🐾 4 porcupine quilled dogs treated
🐾 Over 270 animals vaccinated
North Dakota by national average is more expensive than many states for spay and neuter. Combine that with limited appointment space and lack of financial resources and you have a recipe for overpopulation.
The area we serve is a reservation county, and the common misconception is that pet overpopulation in North Dakota is a Native American issue. I can tell you, from someone who is “boots on the ground”, it’s an income-based issue that goes hand in hand with no affordable vet care.
I have done animal disaster responses for Hurricanes Harvey, Ida, Irma, Florence, Barry, and Michael. During those responses I worked in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Texas.

I saw firsthand that ethnicity had nothing to do with overpopulation. It was all dependent on economics and affordable vet care. The less animals that are created, the fewer that come in to shelters. North Dakota as a state is in the top 5 for the lowest euthanasia rates.
For years, we dreamed of having Spay and Neuter clinics. The only one that would reliably come up would be RAVS (Rural Area Veterinary Services). People would wait in line starting at three in the morning. So here I am getting soaked by cold rain. I begged and pleaded with every vet that I ran into.
Our first clinics were through another rescue that got a grant. We did a few clinics with them, and then Dr. Jess just came along. She was a friend of one of our online volunteers and after the first clinic, we realized it was a match made in heaven. She comes out with her husband, Curt, and usually trusty sidekick Sue. Dr. Kanon Olson has been coming for the last few as well.
|
|
|
The clinics are a lot of work but well worth it. They are typically 12-17 hour long days.
A month before, we start getting copies of paperwork for all the necessary supplies to be ordered. Then a week before, we start setting up tents for the veterinarians to stay in and start loading the bus up at the rescue.
To be continued next month….
Stay tuned….

HOW TO ADOPT
Our rescue is volunteer-based. We rely heavily on our fosters. Most of our animals are adopted out of foster homes. Currently most of our fosters are in the Fargo and Grand Forks area of North Dakota.
We highly encourage you to apply NOW
so you can be pre-approved for future TMAR animals!

Megan is a wonderful member of our TMAR team here in the
Grand Forks area of North Dakota.

I’m a puppy foster, I followed TMAR for about 3 years before I applied to become a foster. Now after over 2 years of fostering I wish I would have started fostering a lot sooner than I did. |

The best thing about fostering is knowing that I’m helping save lives. Bribing a puppy into my home and showing them what life’s like to really be a puppy in a home with a family even if it’s just for a little awhile is so rewarding. Saying goodbye is the most challenging part for me but adopters are usually more than happy to send updates so it’s never truly goodbye. Although goodbyes are hard the rescue always has more puppies ready to foster so it doesn’t take long to get another puppy to fill that spot and give it all kinds the love.
Fostering also led me to our first TMAR adoptions!

In the fall we adopted two kittens, TMAR Coral and TMAR Ledecky. |

More recently fostering led me to my first foster fail, TMAR Bilbo now Albus from the trailer litter rescued in December.

Overall, fostering has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done. Foster fits into all the different types of lifestyles and
I would recommend it to everyone!

Not only does Megan foster, her passion for TMAR rescues brings her to the events to volunteer where ever she is needed, even when she is in between fosters.

Smokey had several run-ins with law enforcement over the years. Lucky for him, that law enforcement was Keith. Keith was never able to catch the sly stray but knew of his existence for several years. Eventually someone caught Smokey before he struggled through another harsh winter. As fate would have it, they brought him straight to Keith, who recognized him immediately. The big guy and Smokey bonded and now Smokey prefers to spend his days perched around Keith’s shoulders like a scarf. |

TMAR operates in an underserved community where veterinary access is sparse and local animals are in desperate need of a helping hand. We work hand in hand with our community to save thousands of animals each year. We are nothing without our community, our volunteers and our supporters.
Every dollar you donate will go towards providing vaccinations, mange and flea and tick treatments, paying for vet bills, gas for transports, food for the animals, and our biggest goal, a shelter. You can donate financially:
