HAPPENINGS AT HEADQUARTERS

Wanda: Our Feral Whisperer !

Building trust with feral dogs is a journey of patience, empathy and small victories. It’s a slow, careful process towards a better life. These animals often come from harsh environments. The cold, heat, or lack of food and shelter can be devastating for animals living on the streets.

Earning their trust can feel like a delicate dance. Each wag of a tail or a cautious step forward is a milestone that speaks volumes about their resilience and capacity for hope. Once they feel safe, it’s incredible to see their true personalities emerge.

The ultimate goal is to help them transition from survival mode to thriving in a loving home, where they can experience the warmth, care, and stability they deserve. Finding them the right match – a family or individual who understands their unique needs. This is the most rewarding part of the process.

RESCUE THE RESCUE CAMPAIGN

RESCUE THE RESCUE

In early December, we received gut wrenching news: the property that has been our home and the heart of Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue (TMAR) is being sold. This is the same property where we’ve cared for over 8,000 animals — the abandoned, the sick, the injured — and turned a once-empty 40x60 building into a place of hope for countless animals in need. If we don’t secure the land, this life-saving work will come to an end.

To save the future of TMAR, we launched the Rescue the Rescue campaign with an ambitious goal of raising $300,000. Incredibly, with the support of so many of you, we reached that goal in just 8 days. We are truly humbled and beyond grateful for the outpouring of love, donations, and messages of encouragement from our amazing community.

But the campaign is far from over. While we’ve hit our initial target, every dollar donated beyond that goal means one less dollar we have to pull from our emergency funds to purchase the land.

Here’s how you can help:

  • You can earmark your donation specifically for the land purchase or for rescue improvements.

  • Any donation for the land purchase directly reduces the amount we’ll need to draw from our emergency funds, bringing us closer to securing the property and continuing our mission.

TMAR began out of a simple desire to do something about the overwhelming need for animal care in rural North Dakota.

When I moved here in 2013, I quickly realized there wasn’t an animal shelter within 100 miles. So, we started Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue on a shoestring budget, with no experience in rescue, just a heart full of compassion and a commitment to make a difference.”

-Keith Benning

From a one-bedroom house and a humble GoFundMe campaign called Saving Grace, we grew into the organization we are today. We’ve rescued and rehomed over 8,000 animals, responded to hurricane rescues, hosted free spay and neuter clinics, and created a pet food bank for those in need. We’ve built a sanctuary of hope and healing, but now, we’re at a crossroads.

The building we’ve transformed into a functional animal shelter could be ours — if we can purchase the land. The owners have generously agreed to donate the building if we’re able to secure the land. This is a chance we can’t let slip away.

The new shelter we’re building is still years away from being fully functional. But buying the current land and building gives us the stability we need to continue the rescue work that is saving lives every single day.

We know this is a big ask, but we believe in this community — and together, we can do this. Your donation will help ensure that TMAR can keep going, keep saving lives, and keep easing the suffering of animals in need.

Please help us rescue the rescue — every contribution counts.
Together, we can secure a future for TMAR, and for the animals that need us.

FEATURED VOLUNTEER

Lori and Larry: fosters, adopters, and event volunteers

Thank you Lori and Larry for your passion and your help

We saw on facebook that TMAR was in need of volunteers to help walk, feed and love on the dogs from the new TMAR/Red Hydrant program in Grand Forks. Red Hydrant was boarding some dogs for TMAR with the hope of them getting adopted faster. We then became a foster with one of the dogs we fell in love with. We adopted her (Stella) and then started fully fostering in February of 2023.

It was a brutal winter and seeing so many dogs out in the cold was heartbreaking so we got our first foster heart. We took her to some meet and greets.

The third meet and greet, this amazing family came in and fell in love with her, had already been approved and then left with her. It was such an amazing thing to experience our first adoption. We were hooked. It was so rewarding.

TMAR operates in an underserved community where veterinary access is sparse and local animals are in desperate need of a helping hand. We work hand in hand with our community to save thousands of animals each year. We are nothing without our community, our volunteers and our supporters.

Every dollar you donate will go towards providing vaccinations, mange and flea and tick treatments, paying for vet bills, gas for transports, food for the animals, and our biggest goal, a shelter. You can donate financially:
